What to expect at 500 KB
500 KB comfortably fits a full-HD photo — around 1920 pixels wide — with quality that survives cropping and mild editing afterwards. This is a good default when you want a smaller file but expect the image to be looked at properly rather than glanced at in a feed.
Which format to choose
For photographs, JPG is the safe choice, and WebP is usually 25–35% smaller again at the same visible quality — worth picking if whatever you are uploading to accepts it, as a few older forms still don't.
