What to expect at 1 MB

1 MB is roomy. A modern phone photo at full resolution usually lands between 1 and 4 MB straight out of the camera, so compressing to 1 MB typically keeps the full pixel dimensions and simply re-encodes at a slightly lower quality. Detail you would notice is very unlikely to be lost.

Which format to choose

For photographs, JPG is the safe choice, and WebP is usually 25–35% smaller again at the same visible quality — worth picking if whatever you are uploading to accepts it, as a few older forms still don't. For screenshots, charts, logos and anything containing text, PNG keeps edges crisp where JPG smears them into a grey haze; the file will be larger, so give it a more generous target. If your image needs a transparent background, use PNG or WebP — JPG has no transparency and will flatten it onto white.
